How Britain’s medical anxiety is fuelling the shift to private medical care

With NHS waiting lists climbing to 7.3 million*, research by Howden Life & Health reveals the growing toll this is taking on the nation’s mental, physical, and financial wellbeing. From sleepless nights to rising out-of-pocket costs, millions of people are turning to private medical care — either by choice or necessity.

The Health Gap research from Howden Life & Health, explores how access anxiety is reshaping public attitudes to healthcare and workplace benefits, and why private medical insurance (PMI) is fast becoming the UK’s most valued employee perk.

We surveyed a nationally representative sample of 2,025 adults in the UK, at least 1,000 of which hold a Private Medical Insurance policy.
